True Tone disappeared after my screen was replaced

True Tone adjusts the screen's white balance to the light around you. After some screen replacements, the switch simply isn't in Settings anymore. It's not a setting you turned off.

Short answer

It depends on the model and the screen fitted. Ask before the repair if True Tone matters to you.

What it's likely to be

  • Screen data not carried over

    Most likely

True Tone relies on calibration data that belongs to the original screen. If it isn't transferred to the new one, iOS hides the switch.

  • Ambient light sensor disturbed

    Possible

The sensor sits at the top of the screen area. If it was damaged or not refitted, True Tone and Auto-Brightness can both misbehave.

Try this first

  1. Check Settings › Display & Brightness, and the brightness tile in Control Centre (long-press it). If True Tone is there, just switch it on.
  2. Restart once after the repair. If it's still missing, no setting will bring it back.
3

Bring it in if

  • True Tone matters to you and you're about to have a screen replaced — tell us first.
  • Auto-Brightness also stopped working, which points to the sensor.
