How an LCD fails vs how an OLED fails

  • After a hard drop
    On an LCD iPhone:
Cracks, dark corners, sometimes a light leak from the edge
    On an OLED iPhone:
Black or purple blots that spread, green lines
  • Screen black but phone alive
    On an LCD iPhone:
Could be the backlight — a torch may reveal a faint picture
    On an OLED iPhone:
No backlight; it's the panel or its connection
  • Faint shadow of the keyboard
    On an LCD iPhone:
    Not burn-in — LCDs don't burn in
    On an OLED iPhone:
Can be burn-in after long use
  • Thin line down the screen
    On an LCD iPhone:
    Possible, less common
    On an OLED iPhone:
    The classic OLED fault

Why it changes your repair options

OLED models can take any of our five screen grades, including the two OLED-type grades. LCD models don't use the OLED grades — the choice is between Original Grade and Premium TFT, which are both LCD-type panels.

A TFT replacement on an OLED iPhone works fine, but it's an LCD-type panel: blacks look a little grey and on some models the visible area is slightly smaller. We'll show you before you choose.

Quick answers

Is the iPhone 11 OLED?
No. The iPhone 11 has an LCD. The iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max are OLED.
Is the iPhone XR OLED?
No, the XR is LCD. The X, XS and XS Max from the same years are OLED.
Can my LCD iPhone be upgraded to an OLED screen?
No. The screen has to match what the phone was designed for.
