Cracked iPhone front glass with the display underneath still clear and working

The checklist

  1. Picture: open a plain white page, then a black one. Look for lines, spots, a dark corner or a bruise-coloured patch.
  2. Touch: drag an app icon slowly around all four edges. It should never let go.
  3. Face ID: lock and unlock a couple of times.
  4. Calls: make a short call. The screen should go dark at your ear and come back after.
  5. The edges: look along the frame for a gap between screen and body.
  6. Back up: if anything above failed, back up today.

What your results mean

  • All six fine but the glass is cracked → you may only need the front glass.
  • Lines, spots or a patch → the display is damaged; it usually spreads.
  • Touch fails in a strip → the touch layer is damaged.
  • A gap at the edge → check the battery before the screen.
A cracked screen is sharp. Put clear tape over it until it's repaired.
