What it's likely to be
Swollen battery
Most likelyAn ageing or damaged battery can puff up and push the screen out of the frame. Common on older phones and phones kept hot.
Adhesive failure after a repair
PossibleIf the screen was replaced before and the seal wasn't done well, the edge can lift with no swelling.
Bent frame after a drop
Less commonA hard corner drop can bend the frame enough to open a gap.
Try this first
- Stop charging it, and don't leave it charging overnight.
- Don't press the screen back down or squeeze the phone. A swollen battery shouldn't be put under pressure.
- Keep it out of the sun and a hot car.
If it's hot, smells sweet or chemical, or hisses, put it on a hard surface away from anything that can burn and don't use it.
Bring it in if
- Any visible gap that wasn't there before — the sooner the better.
- The screen started showing marks or lines near the raised edge.
What SPR usually does
Battery replacement
The swollen battery is replaced. Battery warranty runs 90 to 180 days depending on grade and covers swelling.
Screen replacement — Original Grade
Only if the pressure has damaged the display. Many screens go back down undamaged once the battery is out — we check before quoting a screen.
