What it's likely to be
OLED panel cracked or crushed
Most likelyThe layers inside the panel are broken. Pixels around the damage keep dying, which is why the patch grows.
Pressure damage with no visible crack
PossibleSitting on the phone, or a tight pocket, can damage the panel under glass that looks perfect.
Try this first
- Back up today. Many of these screens go fully black, and a phone you can't see is much harder to back up.
- Stop pressing on the spot to check it. Pressure makes it spread faster.
There's no setting or restart that fixes this one.
Bring it in if
- Any black or purple spot on an OLED iPhone (X and newer, apart from XR, 11 and the SE models).
- The spot is near a crack and the glass is sharp — tape over it to protect your fingers on the way.
What SPR usually does
Screen replacement — Premium OLED
Keeps deep blacks like your original OLED, with the same warranty length as Original Grade.
Screen replacement — Standard OLED
OLED for less. On some models the visible area is slightly smaller.
Screen replacement — Premium TFT
Lowest cost. An LCD-type panel, so blacks look a little greyer.
Glass-only won't help here: the damage is in the panel under the glass.
