My iPhone screen is black, but it still rings and vibrates

Calls come in, notifications buzz, Siri answers — but the screen shows nothing. The phone is alive. The question is whether the screen, its connection, or something on the board has failed.

What it's likely to be

  • Dead display panel

    Most likely

    After a drop or pressure, the panel can fail completely while the rest of the phone keeps working.

  • Backlight fault (LCD models only)

    Possible

    On LCD iPhones like the XR, 11 and SE, the picture is lit from behind. If the backlight fails, the picture is still there but too dark to see.

  • Display connector or board fault

    Less common

    If a working test screen also stays black, the fault is on the board side.

Try this first

  1. Force restart: on iPhone 8 and newer (including SE 2nd and 3rd gen), press and let go of volume up, press and let go of volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. On iPhone 7, hold volume down and the side button together.
  2. Leave it on a known-good charger for a good while. A phone that ran fully flat can take a while to show anything.
  3. LCD models only (XR, 11, SE, 8 and older): shine a torch at the screen at an angle in a dark room. A faint picture means the backlight, not the panel.
  4. Ask Siri to turn up the brightness. It sounds silly, but a brightness setting of zero has fooled people before.

  • Still black after a force restart and a charge.
  • There was a drop, a knock or water.
  • You need data off it soon — come in before trying anything risky.
