What it's likely to be
Damaged or failing panel
Most likelyEspecially after a drop. The flicker is usually in one area and gets worse over days.
Display connector not seated well
PossibleFlicker that comes and goes when you press near the bottom or twist the phone slightly points to the connection, not the picture itself.
Brightness behaviour on OLED
PossibleOLED iPhones dim by switching the pixels on and off very fast. Some people notice this at low brightness. It's how the panel works, not a fault.
An app or iOS bug
Less commonIf the flicker only happens inside one app, the app is the problem.
Try this first
- Turn Auto-Brightness off for a day (Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size). If the flicker was really the brightness jumping up and down, it stops.
- If it bothers you only in a dark room, raise the brightness and use Reduce White Point (same menu) to bring it down instead.
- Update iOS and the app you were in, then do a force restart.
Bring it in if
- Flicker started after a drop or a press on the screen.
- It's in one patch or band of the screen.
- It reacts when you press the glass or flex the phone.
- The screen goes fully black for a moment and comes back.
