What it's likely to be
Screen protector or dirt over the sensor
Most likelyThick or tinted protectors, privacy glass and grime at the top edge are the most common causes.
Sensor not refitted well after a screen replacement
PossibleParts of the sensor setup are moved from the old screen to the new one. If that isn't done carefully, calls misbehave.
Sensor damaged in a drop
Less commonTop-edge impacts can damage the sensor or its cable.
Try this first
- Take off the screen protector and the case and make a test call.
- Clean the top edge of the screen around the earpiece.
- Force restart: on iPhone 8 and newer (including SE 2nd and 3rd gen), press and let go of volume up, press and let go of volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. On iPhone 7, hold volume down and the side button together.
Bring it in if
- It still happens with no protector.
- It started right after a screen replacement.
What SPR usually does
Screen replacement — Original Grade
If you need a screen anyway, the sensor parts are moved to the new screen and calls are tested before you collect.
If it's only the sensor or its cable, the technician quotes that repair rather than a whole screen.
