Face ID stopped working — is it my screen?

Face ID isn't built into the screen. Its parts sit in the top of the phone next to the front camera. But the same drop that cracks a screen can also knock Face ID, so the two often show up together.

Short answer

Face ID is a separate part. A screen replacement doesn't remove it — but if it already stopped before the repair, the drop may have damaged it.

What it's likely to be

  • The drop damaged Face ID too

    Possible

Impact at the top of the phone can damage the Face ID parts directly.

  • Something covering the sensors

    Possible

A thick protector, dirt or a crack right over the notch area can block it.

  • Damage during an earlier repair

    Less common

Face ID parts are delicate and are handled during screen work. A careless repair can break them.

Try this first

  1. Clean the notch or Dynamic Island area and remove the screen protector to test.
  2. Settings › Face ID & Passcode: try Reset Face ID and set it up again in good light.
  3. Write down whether Face ID works before any screen repair, so you know where things stood.
3

Bring it in if

  • Face ID shows “not available” or the setup won't finish.
  • You need a screen anyway — tell us Face ID is already faulty so it's checked together.
