What it's likely to be
Damaged touch layer
Most likelyA crack, or pressure from a drop, can make part of the touch layer report touches that aren't there.
Cheap charger or cable
PossibleElectrical noise from a poor charger can confuse the touch sensor. The giveaway: it only happens while plugged in.
Screen protector or dirt
PossibleA lifted protector, trapped moisture or grime along the edge can register as a finger.
Low-grade replacement screen
Less commonIf the screen was replaced before and ghost touch started soon after, the panel fitted may be the cause.
Try this first
- Unplug the charger. If the ghost touch stops, change the charger or cable.
- Take off the case and screen protector, wipe the glass dry, and watch for a few minutes.
- Force restart: on iPhone 8 and newer (including SE 2nd and 3rd gen), press and let go of volume up, press and let go of volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. On iPhone 7, hold volume down and the side button together.
- If the phone is unusable, turn on Airplane Mode so it can't call or message anyone by accident while you bring it in.
Bring it in if
- It still happens with no charger, no protector and after a restart.
- The glass is cracked anywhere.
- It started after a screen was replaced somewhere else.
